China reign supreme at Qatar TT Open

Chinese players make clean sweep of all categories as the five-day $220,000 total prize money event ends.

THe Chinese dominance in world table tennis continues with the country’s represent-atives emerging triumphant in all the categories as the $220,000 total prize money 2016 ITTF World Tour Qatar Open came to a successful end on sunday. The finals of the five-day event, which was held at the state-of-the-art ali Bin Hamad al attiya arena in al sadd, Doha, made an interesting ending with the world’s best two players in both the men’s and women’s singles slugging it out against each other in the finals of their respective categories. It was an all Chinese af-fairs in the finals of the sin-gles event with ma long pitched against compatriot Fan Zhendong in the men’s while liu shiwen was up against Ding Ning in the women’s for the battle of the No.1 against the No. 2. at the end, all the top players confirmed their rat-ings with an emphatic vic-tory. While ma triumphed over Zhendong 4-1 (11-9,11-9,5-11,13-11,11-5), shiwen equally scripted a 4-1 (11-8,9-11,11-8,11-9,11-9) win over Ning in the keenly con-tested encounter. The finals were witnessed by Qatar Olympic Commit-tee (QOC) secretary-General Dr. Thani bin abdulrahman al Kuwari, africa Table Ten-nis Federation (aTTF) Presi-dent Khaled el salhy, QTTaPresident Khalil ahmed al mohannadi and other digni-taries. In the doubles, the Chi-nese duo of Fan Zhendong and Zhang Jike overcame the stiff resistance of the Japa-nese anchored by Niwa Koki and Yoshinura maharu. The Chinese had an emphatic 3-0 (11-8,11-9,11-7) against the men from the land of the Rising sun. While it was almost an easy ride for the men’s, the women from China were however, made to sweat for their victory as they were pushed all the way, this time again, by the Japanese. Ding Ning and liu shi-wen had to wait till the last game of the ding-dong affair before they could lift their hands in victory with the en-counter ending 3-2 (6-11,11-9,11-6,4-11,11-7). Over 200 participants from 44 countries participat-ed in the tournament regard-ed as the best so far on the tour. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles were each awarded $23,800 cash prize in addition to the tro-phies while runners-up went home with $12,100 each. For the doubles, $7,300 were the cash rewards of the winners while the finalists smiled home with $3,600. speaking about his vic-tory, ma who is now a two-time winner in Doha after his first success in 2013, said, “I was very happy to win and lift the trophy in Qatar. The competition was keenly con-tested and the overall qual-ity of organisation was im-pressive. Competing against Zhendong is not always easy as he is a very good and very skillful player.” “The game went accord-ing to plans and I am happy that I took my chances and at the end of the day I over-came. my plan is to keep winning and to remain on top of my game as long as I can,” added the 27-year-old, who is arguably the best two-winged looper in table tennis history. For shiwen, a victory at the expense of Ning is always special, especially consider-ing the healthy rivalry be-tween the two.
